albert hadley, interior designer

Albert Hadley, one of the most recognized and well known designers of the 20th century, has died at 91 years old.  A few years ago, Lonny Magazine did a feature on his apartment in New York.  Take a gander and appreciate the timeless design aesthetic he was so incredible at creating – a true artist and visionary.  Click here for the article.

Mixing prints is an art form – there is a very fine line between perfect harmony and perfectly tacky.  Our favorite fashion blogger, Blair from Atlantic Pacific, is really good at mixing colors and patterns together.  Her latest outfit features stripes, light denim, a large animal print, and bright red!  How could that work without looking over the top?

It’s all about scale – some prints need to be more subtle so as not to compete.  And she doesn’t just stop at the clothing…this girl accessorizes like nobody’s business.  Your approach should be the same in an interior.  Don’t stop at the furniture – think of her pearl necklace and stack of bracelets.  That is when the outfit really starts to come together.  Good home accessories offer the same reward.

So, if her outfit were a room, this is what it would like:

I chose this because of the casualness but put together feel of this room.  The same can be said about Blair’s ensemble.  In this case, the bold pattern is the striped rug, while the animal print is more subtle and takes a back seat.  A little bit of red is added in with a pillow, some books and one frame – just enough to make a statement without making the entire room seem like a red room.  This room also has great accessories – I think the coffee table is a little cluttered, but I like the variation in the different sizes and colors of the frames above the sofa.  The standing mirror adds a formal touch, along with the large brass lamp – very similar to the way Blair incorporates pearls into her modern outfit.  Here are a few of our favorite things that would help you achieve a room with stripes, red, and leopard print!

1. Robert Allen – Paolo Linen/Cream, $84 per yard, Samuel & Sons – 1/4″ French Piping/Pale Red, $19 per yard;  2. Pindler & Pindler – Bentley/Pumpkin, $43 per yard;  3.  F. Schumacher – Safari/Epingle, $460 per yard;  4. Quadrille – Volpi/Navy on Tint, $198 per yard;  5. Quadrille – Buddakahn/Blues on Oyster, $290 per yard;  6. Made Goods – Bea Stool/Crackled Gold, $420;  7. Jamie Young – Barley Twist Lamp/Black, $220, Medium Drum Shade/Raffia, $162;  8. Arteriors – Lawrence Wood/Iron Mirror, $448;  9. Framed Swedish Bird Print/Heron, $548;  10. Cavallini – Florentine Frames, various prices;  11.  Oly Studio – Pierre Chair in coffee leather, $2,800, Pierre Ottoman in coffee leather, $1,100;  12. Madeline Weinrib Atelier – Khaki Blue Note area rug, price available upon request.

spring

We are back and apologizing profusely for the lack of posts.  It’s been quite a March – a lot of great things happening, but no excuse for no blogging!

While it might be pouring outside and chilly, the cherry trees all over our landscape are telling us it’s Spring.  Maybe some positive thinking about this beautiful time of year when life is “springing” up all over will get the weather to cooperate!  Enjoy this post about all things cherry blossoms.

Words to live by!  Also, if you haven’t heard of Cecil Beaton, image search for him right now – he was an extraordinary photographer, illustrator, stylist, et al.  Almost every famous picture you can think of, he took, from Marilyn to Barbara Streisand to Queen Elizabeth.  A good way to spend a rainy Monday morning!

Fashion & Interiors – Louis Vuitton.

The last collection in this series is Louis Vuitton, shown on March 7th in Paris.  We wanted to save the best for last and knew waiting to see what would come out of Marc Jacobs’s crazy mind would be worth it – did he pull out all the stops or what?!  Check out this video from style.com to see it in action.  It’s short, but gives details behind the idea of the collection and shows the train the Louis Vuitton team built.  What a genius idea to have porters carrying various bags and luggage from the line behind the models.  It’s like a two for one show!  Besides that, the clothes were remarkable.  It had such a taste of nostalgia, fully realized in fabulous, expensive textiles and hats.  Definitely a concept collection, the Louis Vuitton team led by Marc Jacobs gave us a taste of yesteryear, but in a very 2012 way.  Here are some of our favorite looks and rooms to match – you can see the rest of the collection here.

My personal favorite interpretation…

So, there we have it – I hope you enjoyed this series of posts.  It was a lot of fun looking at all of those beautiful clothes and then finding equally beautifully interiors to match.  We had a great reaction to this idea, so look for a post like this every Friday – Fashion Friday!  Have a great weekend.

Fashion & Interiors – Lanvin.

Alber Elbaz started designing for Lanvin, which had basically been closed, in 2001.  Since then, he has developed a style that has something for everyone, yet remains cohesive.  This collection really showed what he is good at:  tailoring and glamour.  We loved his monochromatic looks in jewel tones, so we included four of our favorites and then two looks that combine all of the colors, one cool, one warm.  You can see the rest of the collection here.

Tomorrow, Marc Jacobs’ interpretation of (and obsession with?) Downton Abbey at Louis Vuitton.

Christian Dior Fall 2012 collection meet the designs of Axel Vervoordt.  You both have a lot in common:  beautiful, strong attention to detail and some incantation of grey, be it mauve, dove or charcoal.  I give you the start of a beautiful friendship!  (In case you didn’t get it, all looks are Christian Dior, all rooms are Axel Vervoordt.  See the whole collection here and peruse Axel’s website here.)

Fashion & Interiors – Dries Van Noten.

A Belgian men and womenswear designer, Dries Van Noten has been a heavy hitter in the fashion industry for years.  He has a minimalistic approach to design, one that has really come back into style recently.  In 2008 he won the International Award from the Council of Fashion Designers of America.  A favorite designer of Cate Blanchett, Dries Van Noten has an amazing approach to fashion design; structured, but with a casual layering approach.  His Fall 2012 collection shown at Paris Fashion Week on Monday had a surprisingly large amount of color.  We had a lot of fun finding the rooms for these five looks.  I can imagine exactly who would have a house like this – think cool couple.  You can see the rest of his collection here at Vogue.

Since it is Fashion Week in Paris, I thought it would be appropriate to blog about fashion and interiors.  They really go hand in hand, each influencing the other at various times.  For this post we will feature a few looks from the Chloe collection and their room interpretations.  We LOVED this collection when saw it online and are feeling very inspired.  Watch the video on vogue.com here, Chloe Fall 2012.  Tomorrow we will continue with Dries Van Noten – completely different from Chloe.

And so, here we go!

(This new book will be available for purchase in the shop in May.)
