Quick note:  I’m not sure what happened to Friday’s blog – it posted and then it disappeared.  I apologize for the two postings today!

Mason jars (or canning jars) have long been used for “putting up” – something I started doing about five years ago.  I was saving to go to France to study for a month and worked a second job for a summer at a farm direct fresh produce stand.  Don’t ask how I happened on that job or why I decided to do it, but it was a great experience and I learned a lot about Washington agriculture.  We had a whole group of elderly ladies who would come and get their apples, peaches, tomatoes, cucumbers, green beans, etc. to can for the year.  One day, I asked them about the process and by the next day I had a canner and mason jars, all given to me gratis, by my new canning mentors.

Every since then I have found many ways to keep my mason jars in rotation until I fill them up with veggies and fruit during the summer (I still have most of the jars I started with five years ago).  For instance, the size pictured above is what I use for tomatoes, and then after I use the jar, I use it for salad dressing.  At eight ounces, this a good size for drinks, too.

When I searched for mason jars on the internet, there are tons of great and creative uses for them!  This website has an array of different sizes (and other interesting things, too):  Specialty Bottle.  Here are our favorite repurposes – if you click the picture it will take you to the site for the how-to or more pictures.  Enjoy!

The only limitation is your imagination – mason jars can obviously be used for just about anything!  Have fun experimenting.  There are some really great ideas out there.
